Deck railing installation in Toronto

We install deck railings on wood and composite decks across Toronto and the East GTA. Aluminum picket starts at $85/linear ft, framed glass at $120/ft, and frameless glass at $140/ft installed. Every deck guard is measured for the right height, mounting surface, stairs, corners, and old railing removal before we give a firm number.

Match the railing to the deck

Deck railing installation is mostly about two things: what you want to see from the deck, and what the new guard can safely fasten to. We look at the deck frame, rim joists, blocking, stair layout, and existing posts before recommending glass or aluminum.

View past the yard?

Frameless glass keeps the sightline completely open — nothing between your deck chairs and the ravine, lake, or treeline.

Open feel, working budget?

Framed glass gives you most of the view for about $20 less per foot, with a top rail to lean on and extra stiffness in wind.

Practical and done?

Aluminum picket is the no-maintenance standard — looks right on any deck, never needs paint, and costs the least.

Full pricing detail lives in the deck railing cost guide for Toronto. Deck guard heights and the 24-inch rule are covered in the Ontario deck railing code guide.

Deck guard height and stair details

Ontario deck guards generally need to be 36 inches high on lower decks and 42 inches high when the walking surface is more than 5'11" above grade. Deck stairs add their own work: angled rail sections, more posts per foot, proper transitions at landings, and a rail that can take a real grab. The plain-language rules are in our Ontario deck railing code guide.

Replacing an old deck railing?

A lot of deck work is swap-outs: wobbly wood guards and rusted iron coming off, glass or aluminum going on. We handle removal, disposal, and the structural check as one job. If the deck edge is soft or missing blocking, we call that out before installing a new guard. The removal process is covered on our railing replacement page.

What moves a deck railing quote

Footage is the starting point, but stairs, corners, old railing removal, glass type, mounting surface, deck height, and access all matter. A straight 40-foot deck edge prices differently than the same footage split across stairs and landings. That's why the estimator gives a range and photos turn it into a firm quote.

Deck railing questions, answered

Which railing is best for a deck?

For a deck with a view, glass is usually the better call — framed for value, frameless for the cleanest sightline. For a practical backyard deck where budget matters more than the view, aluminum picket is the workhorse. We recommend from photos of the actual deck, not from a sales script.

What height does my deck railing need to be?

In Ontario, decks more than 24 inches above grade need a guard. Up to 5'11" above grade the guard must be at least 36 inches (900 mm); above that, 42 inches (1,070 mm). We measure and build to the right height as part of every quote.

How much does a deck railing cost installed?

Aluminum picket from $85/linear ft, framed glass from $120/ft, frameless glass from $140/ft, plus the $250 base price. A typical 40 ft deck runs roughly $3,285 to $6,435 installed before old railing removal, depending on system and layout.

Can you install on an older wood or composite deck?

Usually yes. We check the rim joists, blocking, fascia, and deck edge before quoting. A railing is only as strong as what it bolts to. If the deck edge needs reinforcement, we'll say so up front rather than mount to soft wood or weak boards.

Do you remove the old deck railing?

Yes — removal and disposal is $5 per linear foot, and we leave the deck clean and ready for the new system.
