Exterior stair railings in Toronto & East GTA

We install exterior stair railings across Toronto and the East GTA — aluminum picket from $85/linear ft and framed glass from $120/ft installed, on concrete front steps, porch stairs, and deck stairs. Graspable rails at code height, anchored to take a real grab.

Stairs are where railings earn their keep

Nobody grabs a deck railing in a snowstorm — they grab the stair rail. That's why stair work gets the detail treatment: handrail height set between 865 and 965 mm above the nosings, posts anchored so the rail doesn't move when someone catches themselves, and rail profiles you can actually close a hand around.

Concrete steps: aluminum

The east-end classic — black aluminum on weathered concrete steps. Core-drilled or plate-anchored depending on the concrete's condition, sized so the rail height is right on every step.

Deck and porch stairs: framed glass

Raked glass panels under a continuous rail, matching the deck or porch system above so the whole front reads as one design.

Stair rails usually come bundled with a porch railing or deck railing job. Replacing rusted iron stair rails is everyday work — see railing replacement. Code details live in the Ontario railing code guide.

Stair railing questions, answered

Do my front steps need a railing by code?

In Ontario, a handrail is generally required on exterior stairs with more than 3 risers, and a guard kicks in where there's a drop of more than 24 inches beside the stair. Even where it's optional, steps that ice up in January are a good argument for a rail.

What's the best railing for concrete steps?

Aluminum picket with posts core-drilled or anchored into the concrete. It takes salt without rusting — which is exactly where painted iron fails — and gives a solid, graspable rail at code height.

Can glass railings go on stairs?

Yes — framed glass handles stairs well, with raked panels following the stair angle under a continuous top rail. It's a popular look where the stairs connect to a glass deck or porch railing so the whole run matches.

Why do stairs cost more per foot than straight runs?

Angles. Every stair section means raked rails, angled cuts, and more posts per foot of run. We price the actual layout after photos or an on-site measure rather than applying a generic stair multiplier.

Can you just replace a wobbly stair rail?

Yes. Short stair-rail jobs are common. Every estimate includes the $250 base price, so it often makes sense to do the porch guard and steps together in one visit.
